在SAO落幕後，新世代ALO實裝了新大陸「斯伐魯特‧阿爾芙海姆（スヴァルト・アールヴヘイム）」，而 桐人等玩家則以攻略這次更新後新增的未知新大陸為目標，踏上了這塊光與闇交錯的傳說大陸。 在那，桐人 與夥伴們將展開新的故事與新的邂逅───

本作最大的特色就是能在廣大的空中 360 度自由飛翔，能使用劍技與魔法從不同角度攻擊敵人，展開多變化與高自由度的冒險。另外值得注意的是，敵人除了在空中之外，同時也會出現在地面，而本作將能以無接縫的方式在空戰與地面戰兩種模式間切換！ 與前作《虛空斷章》相比，前作只能固定操作桐人並與其他人物組成雙人小隊，而本作除了操作 桐人 之外，還能選擇自己喜歡的角色，以三人一組的方式進行冒險。
